Union Issues, Events & Benefits

CHANGE OF DATE FOR RUNOFF ELECTION VOTE
The deadline and vote count have been advanced two days because of new availability at American Arbitration Association.

DEADLINE IS TUESDAY, JULY 13, 5:00 P.M.
VOTE COUNT IS WEDNESDAY, JULY 14

When filling out a ballot, it is NOT mandatory to put your social security number on the outer envelope. You MUST fill out the return address portion and/or signature to cast a valid vote. There is no breach of confidentiality, for the outer envelopes are separated from the inner ballot envelopes before any vote is looked at. If you leave the entire return address portion blank, your ballot will not be opened or counted, and you don't receive credit for mailing back a ballot.

Firefighters not having received a ballot by July 4th should obtain one by calling AAA directly at 1-(800)-529 5218. Don't wait!

ARE YOU ACKNOWLEDGING CORRECTLY ON YOUR TELEPRINTER?
Under the Roster Staffing Policy (AUC 287), ALL 4 PERSON ENGINES responding to a report of a structural fire must acknowledge by punching 10-14. There is no longer different classifications of engines eligible to acknowledge with 10-14. Remember, STRUCTURAL FIRE = 10-14 for every engine staffed with four. If you are part of a double house, it is acceptable to punch engine/ladder/10-14 at the same time.

UNUSUAL INCIDENT REPORTS FOR O.O.S. UNITS
The UFOA has sent out unusual incident reports for their officers to fill out (immediately) if a unit is out of service or relocated for any reason, e.g. training; medicals; education day; PMP; inappropriate CFR-D response, etc., and an unusual incident occurs. Unusual defined as injury or fatality to member/civilian, unit not available for fire duty, unit forced to operate alone, significant fire extension, etc. If this impacts your company, please kindly remind your officer of this UFOA request.

LT. LENER ARSON TRIAL
On June 8, 1999, Alberto Reposo, the arsonist that caused the death of Lieutenant George W. Lener, Ladder 6, was sentenced to 43 years for his acts on June 5, 1994 at 70 Worth Street, NYC. The members of Engine 9 & Ladder 6 would like to publicly thank all the FDNY members for their time, effort and support in this matter. A request for 'impact letters'had received an overwhelming response from the FDNY members. Special thanks to the members of the Bureau of Fire Investigation for their efforts in helping prosecutors from the state and federal government successfully prosecute this case.

NEW YORK'S COLLEGE SAVINGS PROGRAM
Here's an extraordinary opportunity to help make college more affordable. Parents, grandparents or relatives can set up a Tuition Savings Account for a future college student by investing as little as $25 a month. The first $5,000 invested each year will be deductible for NY State income tax purposes - and none of the investment earnings will be taxed by the State if used according to the plan guidelines. Federal tax on earnings is deferred until the student uses money for such expenses, and then the earnings are taxable at the students income tax rate.

The State Comptroller and the Higher Education Services Corporation are jointly implementing the program. It is being managed by TIAA, a large financial services organization based in New York. The best way to pay for a college education is to start planning and saving now. Call 1-877-NYSAVES if you have any questions.

If your delegate attended the Delegate Educational Seminar in April, he/she might possibly be able to give you a brief idea as to what this program is all about. A class was offered by TIAA Local Representative Anthony Diodato. Anthony can be contacted to answer questions or for enrollment/brochure packages at 1-(800)-842 2733, ext. 3779.

P.S.: I plan on inviting Mr. Diodato to a Fall union meeting to give a presentation to the general membership.
